Dynamic native IPs typically refer to routerable public addresses assigned by operators to user terminals, which change after sessions or lease periods. In contrast, NAT/CGNAT maps multiple users to a shared public address, causing issues such as port reuse and limited inbound connections. If external direct access to user devices is required, dynamic native IPs or static public IPs must be used, while port mapping or relay services are often required via NAT/CGNAT.
In implementation, both DHCP and PPPoE can be assigned public IPs, but when operators adopt CGNAT, the address assigned to users is not the actual public address but a private address space.
Dynamic native IPs are friendly for scenarios such as P2P, remote management, and server hosting; NAT/CGNAT affects the accessibility and latency of these applications.
Confirm the operator's routing table and address segment announcement (RIPE/APNIC) to determine whether the address is a genuine public network address.
DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) is commonly used in Korean broadband/fiber networks to allocate IP on local area networks and certain home gateways. Operators deploy DHCP servers at the access layer or send requests to centralized address pools via DHCP relays.
Lease durations typically range from several hours to several days, and the DHCP option provides gateway, DNS, and routing information. Operators can allocate different pools based on MAC binding, authentication status, or service type.
Large operators use IPAM systems to manage address allocation and link user bills or troubleshooting with logs.
DHCP failures are commonly caused by relay configuration errors, address pool exhaustion, or lease recovery delays, requiring monitoring and automatic scaling pool capacity.
PPPoE is common in ADSL and early fiber access, used to establish PPP sessions and assign IP through account authentication (PAP/CHAP). PPPoE generates session states to facilitate billing and user isolation.
PPPoE servers (BRAS/BNG) maintain session tables, recording usernames, assigning IPs, and session start/end times. After a session is disconnected, IPs can be reclaimed into the address pool.
PPPoE offers session-level authentication and more convenient bandwidth control, while DHCP is lighter but requires additional authentication mechanisms such as PPPoE or 802.1X.
Some Korean operators prefer to use PPPoE for home broadband for billing and traffic statistics, while enterprise or fiber-only access more often uses DHCP or static routing.
Korea's three major operators (KT, SK Broadband, LG U+) and many MVNOs differ in IP allocation strategies: some offer truly dynamic native IPs; Some defaults to using CGNAT to save public network addresses; Some operators also allow paid applications for static public IPs.
KT typically supports PPPoE on enterprise and certain home broadbands and can provide public IP options; SK and LG prefer to use NAT for some plans to save resources, but also offer paid or enterprise-level public network services.
Most mobile and virtual operators (MVNOs) more commonly use CGNAT, and the probability of obtaining native public IPs under mobile data is low. If you must use it, you need to consult the operator and may pay extra or purchase dedicated lines.
Whether a dynamic native IP is provided affects the feasibility of remote access, VPN penetration, and hosted applications. The choice should be based on business needs, ISP SLAs, and port policies.
During implementation, traceroute, whois, and IP header information are first used to determine whether the IP is genuine; If connectivity issues arise, check for unestablished CGNAT or PPPoE sessions or DHCP lease conflicts.
It is recommended to enable IPAM, session logs, and DHCP/PPPoE monitoring, and set alerts to prevent address pool depletion or session anomalies.
For applications requiring stable public network access, prioritize plans that support public IPs or static IPs; In NAT scenarios, reverse proxy, port forwarding services, or VPN rental for public exits can be used.
Confirm IP type with the operator, whether CGNAT is enabled, whether port mapping and static IP application processes are supported, and write key points into the service protocol for subsequent operation and maintenance.
